Managing director role opens to lead the Seaton Delaval Medicines Manufacturing Centre project

Matt Brown, the Managing Director of the North East and North Cumbria Provider Collaborative has issued an update for local pharmacy leads on a new Managing Director role at the Seaton Delaval Medicines Manufacturing Centre.

Since plans for a new regional Medicines Manufacturing Centre (MMC), at Seaton Delaval have been given the green light from NHS England and the Department of Health and Social Care, the recruitment process has began for a Managing Director to lead the project. This is a pivotal role and we wanted to make sure our pharmacy colleagues heard about this first.

The Managing Director at the Medicines Manufacturing Centre (MMC) will be responsible for the provision and management of medicines manufacturing services and contribute to the strategic development of these services across the region.

The job requires a very-high calibre, driven and ambitious candidate who will take on this fantastic opportunity and play a vital role in the development and production of aseptic medicines in the region.

We would be immensely grateful if you could share this with your networks. The MMC will be one of the largest NHS pharmacy manufacturing centres in the UK and is a critical part of the long-term strategy for NHS pharmacy production.

It will produce large quantities of ready-to-administer injectable medicines, including antibiotics, chemotherapy and ‘over-labelled’ medicines for use within all our Trusts.

When it opens, the MMC will work as part of a new hub and spoke model with our existing units, which will continue to play a vital role. Building work on the MMC has now begun and we hope to start operating from the site in Spring 2026, subject to MHRA approval.

This is an exciting time to be a part of a project that will make a huge difference to patients and staff across the region and beyond. We look forward to keeping you all up to date as work progresses.
