Children and Young People

In North East and North Cumbria (NENC) 20% of our population are children but importantly they account for 100% of our future.  Compared to the rest of England, NENC has some of the highest levels of child poverty, childhood obesity, a&e attendance for those aged 0-4 years of age and the highest rates of asthma admission.

A child living in NENC has a 27 percent chance of living in poverty compared to 20% in the rest of England and a 58% chance of living in a local authority with above average levels of low income families compared to just 19% in the rest of England. View the NHSA Child of the North report.

18% of children living in the northeast are living in households that are food insecure with one in five (over 100,000) of all children in our region are living below the deep poverty line.

This is a huge challenge for us in NENC.  If we are to make a better future for those living in NENC we need to improve outcomes and opportunities for our younger people.  We have a number of projects that involve children and young people (CYP) which we are bringing together into one structure in order to create a focus on improving outcomes for CYP in our area underpinned by our ICB Clinical Conditions Strategy CYP Priorities. We are also working closely with the child health and well being network to deliver a programme of work with a particular focus on asthma and epilepsy.
