There are multiple systems in place across maternity and neonatal care to recognise deterioration and the need to escalate, but they are not always structured approaches to standardise the behavioural and communication aspects of effective clinical escalation.
Over the course of 3 years, 16 multi-professional teams from around the country worked together to develop an Escalation Toolkit that can be adopted by any unit to improve clinical escalation.
