This meeting will discuss identified areas where there are blockages and how the Trusts can be supported to unblock these areas using examples of best practice and real world examples.

In early 2019, the AHSN NENC brought together surgeons and anaesthetists from across the region with an interest in EmLap to discuss the current pathway being used within the Trusts and identify where there were gaps against the 6 identified elements:

Early identification of patients who pose the most risk of deterioration
Sepsis screening and early implementation of antibiotics for patients
Prompt diagnosis and surgery with 6 hours for the patient
Consultant delivered care throughout surgery
Fluid optimisation during surgery and critical care
Post-operative intensive care for all.

From this event, a working group was set up and a new, regional pathway developed for use across all of the Trusts. This pathway was rolled out to all acute Trusts in May 2019. Trusts have also had the opportunity to be involved in data requests to enable a comparison between their baseline NELA data (before the pathway was introduced), and their current outputs for comparison.

On 12th March 2021 a meeting was held to support a review of the implementation of the pathway and was also an opportunity to, in line with the PSC plan of works for 21/22, undertake a stocktake of the current position, and address areas of concern by supporting individual Trusts to achieve a better uptake of the six elements.
