What is this event about?

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) is pleased to invite you to a very special event on 21 and 22 November 2023 at the remarkable Concorde Conference Centre at Manchester Airport.

For the first time ever, colleagues from across the north of England are banding together to host an event that will showcase the brilliant life sciences and medical technology research that is happening in the north, as well as demonstrate what the north has to offer to those industries.

Day 1 of the event will focus on the life sciences industry, while day 2 will concentrate on medical technology. The agenda will be published in due course.

Who is hosting the event?

The event is hosted by the four northern NIHR Local Clinical Research Networks (LCRNs), covering the North East and North Cumbria, Greater Manchester, North West Coast and Yorkshire and Humber regions.

Who is the event aimed at?

We look forward to welcoming national and international delegates from across the life sciences and medical technology industries, as well as NHS and wider research partners. There will be plenty of opportunities to network.

What is planned for the agenda?

Each day will start with a series of presentations from key people in the life sciences and medical technology industries. Confirmed speakers for day 1 include Professor Alistair Hall, Clinical Director of the NIHR Clinical Research Network Yorkshire and Humber, who will set the scene by talking about the needs of the north, and former Health Minister Lord O’Shaughnessy, who will deliver a keynote presentation on the life sciences industry.

Professor Hall will reprise his presentation on day 2. Further confirmed speakers for day 2 include Ian Leddy, CEO of TalarMade, who will speak about the medical technology journey from concept to NHS supply chain.

The afternoon of each day will be interactive. You will have the opportunity to explore our Exhibitor Area, find out how research can happen anywhere in our Delivery Zone, join a tour of the Concorde, and attend a number of breakout sessions.

Confirmed breakouts for day 1 include a session on diversity, equity and inclusion delivered by Xoli Belgrave, Head of Clinical Trial Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Parexel; a session on the NIHR National Patient Recruitment Centres (including a focus on decentralised trials); and a session on how the north can work together better by Oliver Buckley Mellor, Research Policy Manager at the APBI.

Confirmed breakouts for day 2 include a session on regulation and CA marking delivered by Phil Brown, Director of Regulatory and Compliance at ABHI, and a session on funding opportunities by Dr Ian Newington, Head of Special Projects (Innovation Programmes and Intellectual Property) at the NIHR Central Commissioning Facility.

What happens when I pre-register?

By pre-registering, you are expressing interest in the event. You are not yet committing to attend, but you will be among the first to hear when the official registration opens.

Please note that there are limited spaces available at this event and we may need to limit the number of attendees from individual organisations once we open registrations.
