The next run of the training course is now ready to go on FutureLearn. It is due to open on Monday (22nd Feb 2021).

FutureLearn offer free and paid options to access the training. There is free access for 8 weeks and you can download all the materials needed to run the BeST programme during this time. If you want unlimited access to the training and a training certificate, then you can pay to upgrade for this.

Speakers

Victoria Strassheim, Health Project Lead, AHSN NENC

Victoria is a project lead in the Musculoskeletal Workstream of the AHSN NENC, since 2018. Victoria is a physiotherapist, with over 25 years wide ranging clinical experience and a masters in Clinical Research. Victoria also works in the CRESTA Fatigue clinic at NuTH.

 

Sue Hart,, Health Programme Manager, AHSN NENC

Sue has worked with the AHSN NENC since 2014. She is a Registered General Nurse, educated to masters’ level and holds numerous qualifications in the management of respiratory disease. She has over 40 years of specialist knowledge and experience within both the NHS and pharmaceutical industry. Sue also works in general practice on a clinical consultancy basis. Sue leads on the management of the Bone Health Programme and Polypharmacy workstream of the Medicines Optimisation Programme.

 

Dr Cormac Ryan, Professor of Clinical Rehabilitation, Teesside University

Dr Cormac Ryan is Professor of Clinical Rehabilitation at Teesside University. Cormac’s research interests are primarily in the area of chronic pain, its impact on people with pain and educational interventions to help better manage the condition.

 

Ewan Maule, Head of Medicines Optimisation, Sunderland Clinical Commissioning Group Lead on the Sunderland and County Durham CCG Public Health Campaign – Painkillers don’t exist

Ewan is the Head of Medicines Optimisation at Sunderland CCG. He moved into primary care in 2018 following a 6 year spell as Deputy Chief Pharmacist at Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS FT, with a short secondment into the role of Interim Chief Pharmacist at Southern Health NHSFT.

Prior to that he had been a clinical pharmacist in a number of Trusts in the North East and had been a pharmacist prescriber in a number of clinical areas including stroke medicine, care of the elderly, cardiology and most recently emergency and critical care.

Ewan is the Vice President of the Guild of Healthcare Pharmacists and has been proud to support and represent members for a number of years.

 

Professor Mike Hurley, Clinical Director for the Musculoskeletal Programme, Health Innovation Network South London

Professor Michael Hurley, is Professor of Rehabilitation Sciences at St George’s University of London, Clinical Director for the Musculoskeletal Programme at the Health Innovation Network South London and the developer of the ESCAPE pain programme.

 

Dr Esther Williamson, Senior Research Fellow, University of Oxford

Dr Esther Williamson is a physiotherapist and senior research fellow at the University of Oxford. She is currently Deputy-Director of the Centre of Rehabilitation Research based in the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences, University of Oxford. In September 2020, she also started a part-time position as a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Exeter. Dr Williamson has been part of team promoting and scaling the BeST programme across the world.

 

Joanne Famelton, HR Manager, AHSN NENC

Joanne Famelton is the HR Manager at the AHSN and has a thorough understanding of the expectations of employers to support their employees within the workplace.

 

Josh Bell, Advanced Physiotherapist, The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Josh is an Advanced Physiotherapist at The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Newcastle upon Tyne working in occupational health.

 

Susanne Nichol, Better Health at Work Award Programme Coordinator, Northern Trade Union Congress (TUC)

Susanne Nichol works at the Northern Trade Union Congress (TUC) and is the Better Health at Work Award Programme Coordinator

 

Professor Denis Martin, Professor of Rehabilitation and Director of the Centre for Rehabilitation Sciences, Teesside University

Professor Martin is a Professor of Rehabilitation and Director of the Centre for Rehabilitation at Teesside University, with research interests in assessing and managing the impact of pain and disability, in which he has published widely and led or collaborated on many projects.

 

Maria Bromage, Cognitive Behavioural Therapist, Persistent Physical Symptoms Service Lanchester Road Hospital

Maria is a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist at the Persistent Physical Symptoms Service, Lanchester Road Hospital, CBT

 

Elspeth Desert, Clinical Director, Persistent Physical Symptoms Service

Elspeth qualified as a Clinical Psychologist in 1988 at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, and has since qualified to practice as a Health Psychologist and a Neuropsycholologist. She also has a Diploma in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). She has worked in Cumbria since qualifying and has been the Clinical Lead for Physical Health Psychology since 2011. She set up this Persistent Physical Symptoms Service in 2016.

She works in the Cumberland infirmary, with inpatients, outpatients and the head and neck oncology team. As Clinical Director for Physical Health Psychology, Elspeth is responsible for the ensuring the service is delivering high class care for all patients, based on evidence and research, and supporting and developing the staff in the team through training and supervision.

 

Graham Stokoe, Head of Communications, AHSN NENC

Having graduated from a BSc in Electronic Media and Communications in 2001, Graham started his career developing brochures, promotional items and e-procurement websites for estate agencies across the country. Following an MA in Media and Public Relations, Graham moved onto a two-year project to communicate the launch of the new Civil Service Pension Scheme on behalf of Cabinet Office. In late 2015 Graham’s career took him into clinical research communications with the NIHR CRN and since May 2018 he has been part of the AHSN NENC Communications team.
